And best supporting technology goes to...

Just recently TechCrunch, VentureBeat, GigaOm and Read/WriteWeb launched The Crunchies, technology startup awards.

I think it’s great that these outlets have gotten together to spotlight the best and the brightest in the startup community. What’s even better is that they’re giving the community the opportunity to vote and participate in choosing the winners.

This got me thinking — what about the technology that has made all of this possible? Web startups tend to be highly guided by advancements in open source technology. Which underlying src is best of the year? Which has had the most impact on the startup community? On top of that, which underlying services and platforms have been incubators for this year’s great new ideas?

Just off the top of my head, I can think of a few contenders:

- Amazon — AWS
- Adobe Flex & FMS
- Red5
- ffmpeg
- Ruby On Rails
- … ?

Personally, I think ffmpeg is one of the most utilized yet under recognized open source projects. Most sites that are built upon user generated video content would be sloth without it. The folk at ffmpeg deserve much more recognition for this — my hat certainly goes off to them.
